New Zealand
New Zealand’s wine history is relatively recent and only dates back to the 1970s. Moreover, its international reputation was largely based on one variety, Sauvignon Blanc, primarily from the Marlborough region on the South Island. In particular, the wine became famous the world over for its intensely vibrant gooseberry fruit flavours. Other regions have also succeeded in producing good Sauvignons including Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Nelson.
However, New Zealand is far from a one trick pony. In particular, the country is now producing some top notch varietal wines made from Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewurtraminer and Pinot Gris. In addition, several producers are also creating impressive sparkling wines which represent excellent value for money.
In addition, New Zealand also usually offers enough sun to make some excellent red wines from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. However, many observers believe that New Zealand’s red trump card is Pinot Noir, especially from the Martinborough and Otago regions. (Financial Times)

Situated at the northern tip of the South Island, Marlborough is New Zealand’s largest and most successful wine producing area. It is renowned for the production of exuberantly fruity Sauvignon Blanc. The Isabel Estate vineyard is one of the largest privately owned wine estates in Marlborough. Yields for the production of Isabel Estate wines are restricted by pruning to low bud numbers and, where necessary, leaf and bunch thinning to ensure that fruit quality is optimized.“We aim to make inspired wines that are a strong expression of the individual style and character, as determined by the vineyard site and soil.”
Isabel produces outstanding Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and a late-harvest SB, “Noble Sauvage”. These are wines of amazing substance and style.
